A junior health staff training progamme on leprosy was conducted on the 19th of December, 2020 at the Diyabeduma, Aththanakadawala and Bakamoona Hospitals belonging to Elahera Medical Officer of Health area of Polonnaruwa District. The programme was conducted with the support of the staff of the Regional Epidemiology Unit, the Supervisory Public Health Inspector, Public Health Inspector for Leprosy along with the FAIRMED Project Officer in the Polonnaruwa District.
A school screening clinic for the students in grade 8 and 9 was conducted at the Ira Handa Ketuwawewa Maha Vidyalaya belonging to Elahera Medical Officer of Health area in the Polonnaruwa District on the 17th December, 2020. The school students were screened for skin conditions including for leprosy. The screening was conducted with the support of the staff of the Regional Epidemiology Unit, the Supervisory Public Health Inspector, Public Health Inspector for Leprosy, Range Public Health Inspector, Public Health Midwife along with the FAIRMED Project Officer in the Polonnaruwa District.
A ring survey was conducted in the Thennekumbura village belonging to the Opanayaka Medical Officer of Health area of Ratnapura District on the 17th February 2021. All the participants were screened and made aware of skin diseases including Leprosy during this survey. Those in need of further care were referred to the clinic at Community hall in Thennekumbura which was held in the evening on the same day. The survey was conducted by the Medical Officer and Additional Medical Officer of Health - Opanayaka, Medical Officer of the Hunuwala Primary Hospital, the Supervisory Public Health Inspector, the Range Public Health Inspector, the Public Health Inspector for Leprosy, two Nursing Officers of Hunuwala Primary Hospital with the support of the Ratnapura District Project Officer of FAIRMED Foundation.
An awareness programme on leprosy was conducted on the 16th of December, 2020 at the auditorium of Pradeshiya Sabha in Siripura Medical Officer of Health area in Polonnaruwa District for their staff members. The programme was conducted with the support of the staff of the Regional Epidemiology Unit, Public Health Inspector for Leprosy, Range Public Health Inspector along with the FAIRMED Project Officer in the Polonnaruwa District.

All the participants were screened and made aware of skin diseases including Leprosy during this survey. Those in need of further care were referred to the clinic at Thedikanda Temple in Samanpura which was held in the evening on the same day. The survey was conducted by the Medical Officer of Health - Kalawana, Medical Officer of the Kalawana Base Hospital, the Supervisory Public Health Inspector, the Public Health Inspector for Leprosy, two Nursing Officers of Kalawana Base Hospital with the support of the Ratnapura District Project Officer of FAIRMED Foundation.
A special screening clinic for the staff members of the Pradeshiya Sabha was conducted on the 16th of December 2020 at the auditorium of the Siripura Medical Officer of Health area in the Polonnaruwa District. All the participants were screened for leprosy and various skin diseases and medicine prescribed accordingly. The screening clinic was conducted with the support of the Medical Officer and staff of the mobile clinic, the staff of the Regional Epidemiology Unit, Public Health Inspector for Leprosy, Range Public Health Inspector along with the FAIRMED Project Officer in the Polonnaruwa District.
A community survey was conducted in the Kurulubedda village belonging to the Welikanda Medical Officer of Health area of Polonnaruwa District on the 7th December 2020. All the participants were screened and made aware of skin diseases including Leprosy during this survey. Those in need of further examination were referred to the clinic at Kurulubedda Temple on December 08, 2020. Those identified as in need of treatment were referred to the dermatology clinic of the Polonnaruwa General Hospital. The survey was conducted by the staff of the Regional Epidemiology Unit, the Supervisory Public Health Inspector of the District, Public Health Inspector for Leprosy and the Supervisory Public Health Inspectors, Range Public Health Inspectors and Public Health Mid Wives belonging to the Lankapura, Elahera, Siripura, Tamankaduwa, Aralaganwila, Welikanda and Medirigiriya Medical Officer of Health areas with the support of the Polonnaruwa District Project Officer of FAIRMED Foundation.

All the participants were screened and made aware of skin diseases including Leprosy during this survey. Those in need of further care were referred to the Medical Office of Health in Pelmadulla. The survey was conducted by Medical Officer of Health - Pelmadulla, the Supervisory Public Health Inspector, the Public Health Inspector for Leprosy, Public Health Inspector of the area, Public Health Nursing Sister with the support of the Ratnapura District Project Officer of FAIRMED Foundation.

To increase community awareness on leprosy, billboards were placed in 14 strategic places in the District of Polonnaruwa under the leadership of the Regional Director of Health Services. This activity was conducted under the guidance of the former Regional Epidemiologist, Dr. U.S.C. Senevirathne with the support of the Public Health Inspector - Leprosy and the FAIRMED Project Officer.
