FAIRMED Sri Lanka supports the local government schools to combat against COVID-19

 

Hand-washing remains the first line of defense against Covid-19, however many rural schools lack basic hand-washing facilities which increases the risk of children and staff contracting Covid-19 and other infectious diseases. 

With the generous donation of the Embassy of Switzerland in Sri Lanka and the support and guidance extended by the Regional Director of Health Services – Puttalam, FAIRMED Sri Lanka was able to ensure safe reopening and operation of selected local primary schools in the Puttalam district during Covid-19 by donating pedal operated sink units and water tanks to establish hand-washing stations within the school premises. As a result, 57 schools identified by the District Health Authorities currently have functional hand-washing facilities for practicing good hand-washing habits.

DELFT Medical Screening

 

The need for comprehensive health screening programmes for marginalized groups was identified in the yearly plan and the first screening programme was conducted for the population in Delft Island. The programme was conducted in collaboration with the Jaffna District Health Authorities on the 14th & 15th of February 2023.

 

The integrated screening programme for NCDs and NTDs along with a dental clinic and a well-woman clinic was conducted for the total population in Delft Island. The screening programme was spearheaded by Dr A. Ketheeswaran, Regional Director of Health Services, Jaffna and conducted with the support of 09 Medical Officers, 02 Dental Surgeons, 01 Public Health Nursing Sister, 17 PHIs and 16 PHMs. Much-needed assistance was given during the programme by the Divisional Secretary, Mr F.C. Sathiyasothy and Dr T.N.K. Suriyaarachchi, Medical Officer of the Divisional Hospital in Delft.

 

98% of the households on the island were visited, and among them, 86.5% of household members were screened, which could be considered a great success.

Eye Care at Samagipuram, Polonnaruwa

 

The community in Samagipuram, Polonnaruwa, is one of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in the district. Also, following a screening conducted in partnership with the health authorities, it was found that many people had visual defects. With these analytics, FAIRMED Sri Lanka took the initiative to go on a "Mission on Vision".

Approximately, 110 community members were screened, 54 were provided with reading glasses and 23 were detected with cataracts, at the eye camp conducted on the 22nd January 2023.

Ring Survey - Vijeriya village

 

A ring survey was conducted in the Vijeriya village of the K​olonna Medical Officer of Health area of the Ratnapura District on the 15th of October 2021. All the participants were screened and made aware of skin diseases including Leprosy during this survey. The survey was conducted with the support of the Medical Officer of Health, the SPHI, PHI- Leprosy, Range PHI, Public Health Midwife, a nurse from the Kolonna Base Hospital along with the FAIRMED Project Officer from the Ratnapura district.

Special Screening Clinic - Civil Security Force Camp, Ridhipokuna

 

A special screening clinic for the Officers of the Civil Security Force was conducted on the 03rd of August 2021 at the Civil Security Force camp in Ridhipokuna in Polonnaruwa. All the participants were screened for leprosy and various skin diseases after which medicine was prescribed accordingly. The screening clinic was conducted by the Regional Epidemiologist with the support of the Medical Officer of the Mobile Clinic, the staff of the Regional Epidemiology unit and the FAIRMED Project Officer in the Polonnaruwa District.

COVID-19 Medical Equipment Donation- Polonnaruwa

 

With the spread of COVID 19 throughout Sri Lanka, the National Health System was and continues to be under heavy strain. Health Authorities have found it quite challenging to strategically address the ongoing spread. As an initiative taken to assist the Department of Health, FAIRMED Sri Lanka has extended our support to strengthen the covid response of hospitals in the project districts.

FAIRMED Sri Lanka supported with the establishing of the intermediate care centre at the Base Hospital Hingurakgoda, in Polonnaruwa. FAIRMED contributed to the establishment of the unit by donating two Bi PAP/ CPAP ventilators, ten Syringe pumps, ten infusion pumps and ten pulse oximeters. The equipment was handed over to the Regional Director of Health Services, Dr W.K.W.S Kumarawansa with the participation of the Regional Epidemiologist Dr K.M.M Koralage by the FAIRMED Project Officer for Polonnaruwa, Mrs Jeevanthi Senevirathne.

The programme was conducted by the Public Health Inspector for Leprosy of the CMC along with the FAIRMED Project Officer in the CMC Office.

A ring survey was conducted in the Yaya 7 village of the Medirigiriya Medical Officer of Health area of Polonnaruwa District on the 1st of July 2021. All the participants were screened and made aware of skin diseases including Leprosy during this survey. The survey was conducted by PHI Leprosy, Range PHI and other Public Health Inspectors with the support of the Polonnaruwa Project Officer of FAIRMED Foundation.
